The True Beauty Of Self Love

It’s the beginning of a new year, and for many, the lockdowns and restrictions rumble on.

You will likely have found that you have had more time to think, more time to ponder and more time to ‘be’ over the last 12 months and this may have led to some more intense levels of self-reflection. If you have, what did you discover and how did you feel?

Did your reflection come from a place of love or from a place of self-criticism and dissatisfaction? The reality is, wherever you are in your life journey right now, you are doing the best you can, and that’s enough. It is always important, regardless of how you’re doing, to show yourself a generous amount of unconditional love and kindness.

You’re not alone if you let your insecurities and doubts get the better of you, and in doing so you will likely overlook or disregard those parts of you that truly shine and sparkle.

Learning to love yourself can be difficult and will take practice, especially if you are so used to believing that you do not deserve self-kindness and self-compassion.

It will take commitment and dedication, but this investment in yourself will pay dividends in the long-run.

Here are 4 powerful ways to practice self-love

  1. Make Time For Yourself

Many people don’t enjoy or feel comfortable being in their own company, but that is often an avoidance technique, side-stepping the need to be alone with their own thoughts, emotions or memories.

Ensure that you allocate yourself some ‘me time’ at least once a week. Even if it is only for 15 minutes. The reality is that you have to live with yourself all of your life, so you might as well become your best friend.

  1. Be Forgiving

We all have moments in our lives that we wish we could change. Things we have said, things we have not said, hurt we have caused or errors we have made. These regrets may be big or small but we must accept that these moments have gone and they cannot be changed. These missteps have enabled us to be who we are in the present day and that, in itself, is a blessing. Forgiveness unlocks so many doors, so make peace with your past and live in the present.

  1. Nourish Your Mind

Watch a documentary, read a book, learn a new skill or hobby…simply put, if you aren’t learning then you aren’t growing. So do yourself the honour of feeding your brain and your soul.

  1. Affirmations

If the idea of standing in front of a mirror and declaring that you love yourself makes you feel uncomfortable, then it’s likely a sign that your soul is craving love and approval from you!

Choose some strong and powerful affirmations and practise them in the mirror daily. By making a habit from this, you will find your frame of mind start to shift and your inner confidence, and self-love, start to blossom.
